Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dons Fall to No. 21 Cal on the Road

BERKELEY, Calif. – The USF women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss to the 21st-ranked Cal Bears on Friday afternoon at Goldman Field.

"It was disappointing," said head coach Jim Millinder. "It's a challenge when you spot any team goals, let alone one of the top teams in the country. Our first half was very good, but then the next thing you know you're down three goals."

Cal (7-2-0) took a lead midway through the first half when Arielle Ship followed up a rebound in the box for the first of her two scores on the day.

Miciah Madison just missed out on a chance shortly before that when she sprung free on the right wing, but Cal keeper Emily Boyd made one of her two saves in the match by sprinting out and smothering Madison's attempt before she could get a clean shot off.

Coming out of halftime, Cal netted a pair of quick goals to pull ahead 3-0. Shipp struck again in the 53rd minute when she dribbled down the right side and punched one past USF keeper Makayla Presgrave. A minute later, Abigail Kim found the back of the net after taking a pass from Emma Fletcher and slotting it inside the far post.

USF (3-6-0) got on the board in the 60th minute with Nakae's first goal of the year. Whittle delivered a beautiful pass to Nakae, who found an angle streaking up the middle of the box and slipped the shot past Boyd.

Cal's Maggie Bell added the final goal of the day in the 66th minute to give the Bears their final 4-1 lead.

After a first half relatively even in shots – Cal held a 6-4 advantage in the half – the Bears outshot the Dons 14-3 in the second frame, keeping Presgrave busy in goal. Presgrave logged her fourth contest of the year with nine saves.

UP NEXT: With their season-long seven-match road swing now in the books, the Dons return to Negoesco Stadium to host UC Davis at 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. That game will be streamed live on TheW.tv with USF's broadcast tandem of Charles Wollin and Joe Dugan.
