For senior forward Bryce Kaminski, soccer is his first love. But it's also the thing that propels him to work harder, giving his full effort to the sport, and in turn to everything he does, as he hones his craft.
"It's the first love of my life," begins the senior from San Clemente, Calif. "Without it I wouldn't be as confident as I am, I wouldn't be such a good student in the classroom. It helps me strive in all aspects of life, it helps me become a leader.
"Whether I'm a leader, whether I'm a goal scorer, whether I'm an MVP, I just want to know that I gave it my all. I take in every minute I have because I know I'm not going to have this forever. I don't want to have any regrets. I want to look back on this and say I gave 100 percent in everything I did."
Here in this spotlight on Kaminski, featured in the latest episode of USF's cable television show "Behind the Mask," he takes fans through his start in the sport, his decision to play collegiate soccer for the Dons and the drive to be a gladiator on and off the pitch.
Kaminski's drive is not only seen on the field, but in the weight room, his daily diet, and in the methods he employs to balance practice and school with working at the Koret Health and Recreation Center, giving his all in every aspect of life, and cognizant of the opportunities soccer has afforded him.
"Work ethic is the one thing you can control. You just need to have the desire for it and want to strive to be the best," he notes. "The only way to set yourself apart is by giving 100 percent in everything – off the field, on the field, diet, nutrition, mental aspects. Without that, you're never going to be the player you could potentially be."
Fans can watch Bryce and the Dons in action this weekend from Negoesco Stadium, as the squad takes on Pacific on Friday at 7 p.m.
