Behind the Mask: Culture Creating with USF Volleyball

The new-look coaching staff of the San Francisco volleyball team is on display in this segment of the latest episode of "Behind the Mask," and viewers can learn more about the style and philosophy of head coach Frank Lavrisha and his energetic staff.
For Lavrisha, one of the winningest volleyball coaches in NCAA Division II history, student-athlete growth and development goes beyond the court. He and his trio of youthful coaches on the sideline are determined to develop a program where culture is key.
"There are two things we want to do," Lavrisha noted. "One is culture, and culture is about the will to work, it's being courageous about competing, and it's having a team first attitude. The other piece is we've got to bring in talent and maximize the talents that we have.
"We establish the culture that we want: that we're going to work our butts off, we're going to compete no matter who is on the other side of the net, we're going to maximize our talent our talent on the floor. Those two things, culture and maximizing our talent. Then I think the competitive greatness will emerge. We as a staff, we just want to set up that environment so that these athletes have the opportunity to be able to compete and emerge with what they have inside of them."
After a weekend that saw the Dons take both Portland and Gonzaga to five, USF hits the road for a trio of matches. First is a trip to its longest-standing rival in program history as the Dons face off with Santa Clara on Friday at 7 p.m.
This episode featuring the volleyball squad is slated to reair on NBC Sports California four times in the upcoming week: tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and again Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.
