Heading South to San Jose State

THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team is set to depart from the Hilltop, headed a few hours down south to San Jose, Calif. The Dons (2-4, 0-0) will take on the San Jose State Spartans (2-4, 0-0) from the Mountain West Conference on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

USF is coming off a competitive game against No. 16 Stanford. Although the short-staffed Dons opened the first quarter ahead 19-12 and led at half, the Cardinal shot lights out to eventually open up a 20-point gap by the fourth quarter. Coach Goodenbour took a 66-86 loss to her alma mater and former head coach, Tara VanDerveer.

The Dons were able to take away the best from the tough match up with the Palo Alto visitors. They were able to execute their game plan and find a rhythm, even though the rotation only included eight players (due to injuries).

On the opposite side of the floor, the Spartans most recently defeated the Santa Clara Broncos, 71-66, in an overtime contest on Wednesday evening.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • San Jose State is led by sophomore Taylor Turney who averages 14.2 points per game. She is shooting 50.8 (30-for-59) percent from the field Turney also records 4.7 assists per game.
  • Senior Myzhaniqu Ladd is also recording in double-digit points with her 11.2 per game. Ladd is tops in rebounds, bringing in 7.8 each contest.
  • Cydni Lewis tied with Ladd in leading the team in their last contest against Santa Clara, each with 14 points.
  • The Spartans hold their opponents to 5.8 three-pointers, 28.7 percent per game. This could present a problem for the Dons who average eight per game and recorded nine in their last contest.
  • Before their overtime win against the Broncos, the SJSU had been on a 0-3 skid.
DONS BY THE NUMBERS
  • Michaela Rakova leads the Dons in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.5 ppg and 6.7 rpg.
  • Rakova has now led or tied in leading in scoring in the past three of USF's games. It is her fourth game scoring in double-digits.
  • Three other Dons are scoring 10-plus points, including Anna Seilund (11.5), Shannon Powell (11.0), and Kalyn Simon (10.7).
  • Seilund is the assist leader for the team with her 6.3 per game.
  • Seilund and Ninni Salmi have each amassed 11 three-pointers, shooting on 44.1 and 40.0 percentages, respectively.
  • The Dons are in the top-five in four categories in the WCC rankings: three-pointers made (2nd, 8.0 per game) three-point field-goal percentage defense (3rd, 34.5), three-point field-goal percentage (4th, 33.1), and field-goal percentage (5th, 42.5).
