Final Team and Individual Results
STANFORD, Calif. – USF men's golf team finished The Goodwin today on a high note, as the Dons posted their lowest team score to tie for 12th in one of the strongest fields of the spring.
USF, which entered the final round in 18th place after rounds of 301 and 298, turned in a 3-over team score of 283 to vault six spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 12th place with Nevada at 882 (+42), two strokes ahead of 19th-ranked Colorado.
Stanford won the team title with a 3-under score of 837, good for a nine-stroke win over top-ranked USC, which finished at 846.
BYU freshman Rhett Rasmussen, who finished second at USF's Olympic Invitational in the fall, claimed medalist honors with a 4-under total of 206. Rasmussen, who seized control of the tournament with a second-round 64 on Friday, held off Franklin Huang of Stanford and Harry Hall of UNLV, who finished one back at 207.
Three of USF's five golfers posted rounds of even par or better as the Dons posted their lowest single-round score at Stanford Golf Course since 2013.
Tim Widing carded a final round 69 and tied for 20th place at 5-over 215. The freshman got off to a fast start with three front side birdies, but three consecutive bogeys to start the back nine brought him back to even par on the day. The Swede got back into red numbers with a birdie on his 16th hole of the day, the par-5 seventh.
Max Alcorn turned in an even par round of 70 to finish at 7-over 217 for his three days of work, good for a share of 30th place. The senior, who lowered his score each of the last two days after opening with a 75 on Thursday, birdied the par-5 seventh hole, his 16th of the day, to get his round back to even.
After back-to-back rounds of 77, Henry Chung broke through with a 1-under 69 on Saturday and tied for 64th place at 223 (+13). The junior was 3-under after 10 holes but fell back to even before making a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole, his last of the day.
Jalen Griffin finished with a final round 76 to tie for 106th at 230 (+20) while Michael D'Angelo also carded a 75 to tie for 114th at 232 (+22).
Head coach Jack Kennedy hopes the team's strong final rounds gives USF a boost of confidence heading into the WCC Championships which are rapidly approaching.
"Given the course set up and conditions, this morning's front nine was the best golf we've played all season," said Kennedy. "We knew our second nine was going to be a real test and we showed a lot of character with the way we finished.
"We have to feel good about ourselves any time we can beat top-25 teams and finish in the top half of an elite field. I think we are peaking at the right time and we can't wait to get to Utah."
The Dons' next action will come on April 10-11 at the BYU Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo, the same venue which will host the WCC Championships a week later.
