USF Lose 1-0 To Texas Tech In Double OT

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team lost, 1-0, to Texas Tech on a penalty kick in double overtime at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Dons dropped its record to 1-1-0 while the Red Raiders improved to 2-0-0 with both teams kicking off the 2017 season at the Lobo Invitational.

In the second overtime of the tightly fought contest, Texas Tech drew a penalty in the box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for the Red Raiders.
TTU's junior midfielder Carly Wickenheiser slotted the ball past Dons goalkeeper Olivia Camera, who up to that point had a career-high 10 saves, to win the match in the 105th minute.

"It was gutting for the players because they battled so hard for 105 minutes.  It's unfortunate it had to end on a penalty kick," lamented Dons head coach Jim Millinder.  "But give credit to Texas Tech.  They are organized, athletic and have a lot of weapons.  There's a reason they've made the NCAA tournament for five straight years."

Camera kept USF in the game making three saves in the first half to keep it a scoreless match heading to the half even though the Dons were out shot 14-to-2.

"Olivia was very good today.  She had a really good presence.  You need performances like that to be a tournament team and she kept us in the game," said Millinder.  In the second half, Camera made four additional saves, while the Dons managed to get off six shots but the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation.

"We had chances to win as we got a couple of good looks," said Millinder about his team's overtime play.

For the game, TTU outshot USF, 30-to-9, including 11-to-2 shots on goal but at the end it came down to the penalty kick.

Three USF players logged all 105 minutes in the match - Camera, Autumn Smithers and Allison Arriola.  In all, 19 players saw action playing in the 5,300 plus feet altitude at Albuquerque.

The Dons host Cal in its home opener on Friday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium.
