SAN FRANCISO – In front of a packed house at Negoesco Stadium, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half but lost to UCLA, 5-3, on Saturday night.
"We didn't show up in the first half and that was the difference. You play a team like UCLA, you can't shy away for fifty minutes and think you are going to be on the end of a good result," said Dons head coach Eddie Soto.
San Francisco (0-1-0) got a pair of goals from midfielder Leon Schwarzer within a minute of each other in the 53rd and 54th minute cutting its deficit in half, 4-2.
UCLA (1-0-0) used its speed and pressure to tally three goals in the first half and added a fourth goal in the 51st minute before the Dons could answer.
Schwarzer's first goal in the 53rd minute came on a header off Santiago Digiuseppe's corner kick.
A minute later, USF's Sean Bowman headed back the ball from a long cross to the awaiting Schwarzer at the top of the box. The senior from Germany sent a bullet to the bottom left corner, beating UCLA goalkeeper Kevin Silva.
Schwarzer nearly got a hat trick in the 64th minute when his shot inside the 18 went barely over the bar.
Just as the momentum was shifting to the Dons' favor, UCLA scored its fifth goal of the game in the 67th minute when Santiago Herrera picked up a loose ball off Dons goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver's save to slot it home.
Digiuseppe scored the final goal of the match in the 83rd minute when he rocketed a shot from a headed pass by Tawwab Emilo for the final margin of the game, 5-3.
"This is a night where we're going to just have to learn from and move onto the next game,' said Soto.
USF's next match is on Monday, August 28 at 5:00 p.m. against UC Davis on the road.
