SAN FRANCISCO – "Behind the Mask," USF Athletics' monthly cable television show is back for its fourth season on the airwaves of NBC Sports California, and the first episode of the 2017-18 school year is slated to debut tonight at 7:30 p.m.
This month, a standout soccer player showcases his warrior mentality, women's cross country adds another talented runner to their nationally-ranked team, and a new coaching staff brings a fresh perspective to the volleyball program.
Fans will hear from forward Bryce Kaminski as he talks all things soccer, and how his love for the sport led him to USF and propels him to give 100 percent to the sport that he loves as he hones his craft.
"Soccer is everything to me. Ever since I was about three or four years old, watching the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, soccer is the first love of my life," says the senior from San Clemente, Calif. "Without it I wouldn't be as confident as I am, I wouldn't be such a good student in the classroom. It helps me strive in all aspects of life; it helps me become a leader."
Newcomer to the eighth-ranked women's cross country squad, Lizzie Bird, is in the Dons Spotlight as she talks about her transition to San Francisco after competing for the Princeton Tigers and earning her undergraduate degree in politics.
The graduate student from St. Albans, England, is grateful for the opportunities that running and learning in the United States has afforded her, and she's ready to make a big contribution to the Dons' program, both in the classroom and on the course.
"In the U.K., you have to make a decision pretty early on whether you want to do academics or you want to do athletics and I think the U.S. college system does a really good job of allowing you to do both," reflects Bird. "At Princeton, there was more of a focus on academics I would say, although we really tried to pursue athletics at a high level. After four years there I wanted to continue my running further and kind of take that step to the next level, but I really wanted to be in an environment where I could just kind of see where I could go with running if I put that bit of extra time and effort into it."
Finally, the new-look coaching staff of the USF volleyball team is on display, as viewers can learn more about the style and philosophy of head coach Frank Lavrisha and his energetic staff.
"There are two things we want to do," he notes. "One is culture, and culture is about the will to work, it's being courageous about competing, and it's having a team first attitude. The other piece is we've got to bring in talent and maximize the talents that we have."
As always, the episode will conclude with "Playmakers," highlighting top team and individual performances from USF athletes. Here, you'll see game-winning goals, match-clinching kills and dominating Dons on the cross country course, soccer pitch, and volleyball court.
Along with tonight's prime time debut at 7:30 p.m., the episode reairs multiple times in the coming days – Thursday at 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Check local listings for your cable provider's station guide and additional air dates and times each month.
