THE RUNDOWN

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team scored a season-high five goals en route to defeating San José State, 5-2, in a non-conference match on Friday night at Negoesco Stadium.

USF improved its record to 2-7-0 while SJSU dropped to 2-5-0 on the season.

The Dons blitzed the Spartans early and often scoring three goals in the first half over an 11-minute span.

Junior midfielder Santiago Digiuseppe got things rolling for the Dons in the 22nd minute when he slotted a ball with his left foot underneath Spartans goalkeeper David Heredia for his third goal of the season.

Eight minutes later in the 30th minute, junior Sean Bowman's volley shot off a Leon Schwarzer assist found the back of the net to put the Dons up, 2-0.  It was one of two goals by Bowman on the day to tie Schwarzer for the team lead in goals with four.

In the 33rd minute, Schwarzer was fouled in the box by SJSU and calmly made the penalty kick to make it a 3-0 match heading to the half.

The Spartans made a game of it when they scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute.  SJSU's Zach Penner and Eduardo Buenfil each scored their first goal of the season to cut San Francisco's lead to 3-2 with 30 minutes remaining in the match.

However, Bowman's second goal of the match in the 66th minute off a failed corner kick clearance extended USF's lead back to two goals, 4-2.

Aaron Lombardi, who missed a penalty kick earlier added a goal in the 89th minute for the final margin of victory for the Dons.
