Dons Earn Draw with Visiting Gonzaga

SAN FRANCISCO – After two overtime periods a game-deciding goal could not be scored by either team as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team and the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs settled on a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Negoesco Stadium.

It was a tale of two halves as USF (9-5-2, 2-1-2 WCC) dominated the Bulldogs (8-3-3, 3-1-1 WCC) for 45 minutes.  In the first period, the Dons maintained possession on their opponents' half, and stymied any offensive chances by the visitors.  The Dons midfield and defense was sensational as Gonzaga mustered just two shots in the first half, none on goal.

USF had plenty of good looks in the first period with Karley Weeks getting three shots in the first half and running all over the field.  Ultimately, USF was held scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

Out of the break, Samantha Jehnings got the Dons on the board in the 55th minute when she sent a header past Gonzaga's keeper for her 10th goal of the season.  Miciah Madison and Mia Villegas were credited with the assist on the play.  Villegas sent a long pass down the sideline where Madison tracked it down and sent a beautiful cross to the waiting Jehnings on the far side of the goal.

Over the final 20 minutes of regulation, Gonzaga came to life.  The Bulldogs midfield kept the ball on USF's side of the field and put lots of pressure on the Dons defense.  Ultimately, Gonzaga got the equalizer in the 81st minute when Jodi Ulkekul blasted a shot from 25 yards out on the left side and beat Molly Eby to her right.

In the second half, Gonzaga outshot the Dons 10-6.  After owning a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks in the first half, the Bulldogs owned a 4-2 advantage in the second half and both overtimes.

Eby (6-2-1) was sensational between the pipes in overtime.  She finished the evening with four saves, one coming in the first and second overtime each.  Her save early in the first overtime sent away a sure game winner by the Bulldogs who had a wide open look against the Dons' keeper.
