LOS ANGELES – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team captured its first conference win of the season, defeating host Loyola Marymount 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
The Dons' defense put the clamps on Loyola Marymount (3-4-8, 1-2-1 WCC) in the opening half, outshooting the host Lions 3-0. USF (8-5-1, 1-1-1 WCC) got just enough offense from a goal by
Kalena Teufel in the 21
st minute.
Teufel took a pass from
Miciah Madison who took the ball up the line and crossed it to Teufel for her third goal of the season. It was assist number eight for Madison.
Nursing a 1-0 advantage, the Dons' defense did its job. The Lions put the pressure on USF, outshooting the Dons 6-1 after the break. The Lions also had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Molly Eby (5-2-0) earned the shutout, her fourth of the season.
COACH'S QUOTE
"We came out strong today," said head coach
Jim Millinder. "I don't think we came out strong enough in our last three games. KK finished on a great chance and Miciah did a great job with the run down the line to set up that goal. We knew LMU was going to come at us in the second half, but our kids battled, especially after a long overtime game on Friday against Pepperdine, a good result from us. We had some great individual performances,
Catherine Hill was outstanding, Autumn was outstanding, Molly got the clean sheet, just a fantastic team performance. We are happy with the result. Any time you get a win on the road in conference play is a good thing."
