SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's golf team didn't let an early deficit and a lot of rain stop them from marching back to capture third at the MacKenzie Match Play hosted by the Dons at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Dons wrapped up the second round as the skies opened up and the rain started to fall Tuesday morning. Tournament champion Wyoming held off the Dons in the second round winning 3-0-2.
Toby Briggs and Jalen Griffin finished the second round all square against their opponents. Soren Lind lost 1 up, Tim Widing lost 2 and 1 and Alex Chin lost 3 and 1.
Following a quick turnaround with the steady rain pouring, the Dons took on Cal Poly for the battle for third. Early on the Mustangs had the advantage but USF rallied back to take the match 3-2.
Widing defeated Jimmy Castles 3 & 1 to lead things off for the Dons. Widing finished the tournament 2-1. Toby Briggs defeated Cal Poly's Mitch Martin on the 19th hole. Briggs went 1-1-1 over the three rounds. Chin also earned the win, going 2 up on the 19th hole.
Wyoming defeated Marquette 3-2 to go 3-0 on the weekend. Marquette finished second after going 2-1. Cal State Monterey Bay defeated Fresno State 4-0 to take fifth, Sacramento State defeated Menlo College 3-2 for seventh.
COACH'S QUOTE
"Today had a little bit of everything," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "We battled through some tough conditions, hung in there against some really good Golf from our 2 opponents and gave ourselves a chance to win a match. I thought we did a great job of not beating ourselves today even when the rain really started to come down. Now our attention turns to Harding Park and another opportunity to tee it up with the Nation's elite programs."
NEXT UP
The Dons will return to action when they stay local, participating in the Goodwin, hosted by Stanford at Harding Park, Mar. 29-31.
