SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco wrapped up its opening homestand with a draw on Sunday following a 1-1 double overtime thriller against visiting San Diego State at Negoesco Stadium.
USF (1-0-1) found itself down a goal – and a man--late in the first half. The Aztecs (0-1-1) scored first when Pablo Pelaez scored in the 14
th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out to go up 1-0.
Very early on, the contest was a physical one, culminating with the Dons' earning a red card with less than nine minutes to go in the first half.
Out of the break, the Dons played with renewed energy. USF was outshot 5-2 in the first period by the Aztecs but in the second, down a man, outshot the visitors 8-6.
Throughout the early going, USF continued to put the pressure on the Aztecs, who seemed content to sit on their 1-0 lead with a man advantage. The Dons pressed the issue, getting several set pieces on free kicks.
Eventually, USF evened up the scoreboard as freshman
Cameron Martin scored in the 62
nd minute, when SDSU's keeper could not corral a shot by
Noah Leong. With the score tied, the Dons' defense continued to do its exceptional job of keeping SDSU from mounting much of an attack.
At the end of regulation, the game went into overtime. From there, USF's defense was once again put to the test. Offensively, USF couldn't get anything going and did not record a shot in either overtime period. San Diego State, on the other hand, tallied six overtime shots, five coming in the second and final overtime period.
Ruben Stuiver did his part in the net, finishing with five saves on the afternoon, and none bigger than his final save which came in the 101
st minute. Of Stuiver's five saves, three came after the initial 45 minutes of play.
