VB | San Diego Stops Dons in Southern California

SAN DIEGO — The University of San Francisco volleyball team held early leads in multiple sets Saturday on the road at perennial power San Diego, but the host Toreros came from behind each time and earned their 12th straight win with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) West Coast Conference sweep over the Dons at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Francisco (4-13, 0-6 WCC) got out to 4-1, 7-4 and 12-8 leads in the first set against San Diego (14-4, 7-0 WCC). Katie Wagstaff, Emily Zinger, Valeria Alegrias Cambindo, Orsula Staka, and even setter Ally Wada all had kills in the early goings to give the Dons the lead midway through. San Diego would come to life, however, ending the set on a 16-5 run that included four blocks and eight kills to take a 1-0 match lead.

  • San Diego never trailed in the second set, starting with three consecutive points and running out to as much as a 10-point lead at 21-11 before grabbing a 2-0 match advantage with a 25-15 set win. San Francisco wasn't finished though, as it grabbed its own 3-0 lead to start the third.

  • San Francisco still led 5-4 early in the third set before the Toreros would run off a match-determining 8-0 run. They wouldn't trail again, though the Dons rallied to stay within five on three occasions.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • .060: San Diego held the Dons to .060 hitting Saturday. It was the third consecutive match San Francisco has hit below .100, a streak it hasn't seen since the final three matches of the 2016 season.
  • 11: Alegrias Cambindo's match-leading 11 kills marked her fifth double-digit kills performance this season. She has had 11 or more in each of those matches.
  • 17: San Diego totaled 17 blocks as a team, with three players tallying five or more. It was the most blocks by a USF opponent since Southern Utah also had 17 against the Dons on Sept. 4, 2015.
  • 22: Wada's 22 assists made for her 16th consecutive match with at least 22. She's already far surpassed her single-season assists total of 409 from last year, sitting currently with 538.
COMING UP
  • San Francisco returns home next week for its first consecutive home matches since Sept. 13 and 14 when it hosts Portland on Thursday and Gonzaga on Saturday. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
