SAN FRANCISCO — It was a day for debuts and domination Saturday, as the University of San Francisco women's basketball team played its first exhibition of the 2019-20 season, beating cross-city neighbor San Francisco State, 105-70, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center with five new Dons seeing their first minutes on the court in the Green and Gold.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- True freshman Ioanna Krimili, graduate transfers Mikayla Williams and Dolapo Balogun, junior college transfer Lucie Hoskova, and sophomore transfer Leilah Vigil, all donned a Dons jersey for the first time Saturday, and all performed well. The new quintet combined for 64 of the Dons' 105 points and 28 total rebounds. Hoskova, Krimili, Vigil and Williams were all part of the Dons' new-look starting lineup that also included returner Abby Rathbun.
Â
- Outside of an early 3-pointer by Jolene Armendariz that gave San Francisco State a 5-2 lead in the first quarter, the Dons had no problem with the Gators. A 19-5 run for much of the rest of the first quarter put the Dons up by double digits at 21-10 and they never looked back. USF scored at least 24 points in three of four quarters Saturday, including 36 in the second alone.
Â
- The Dons were excellent from deep in their first real competition of the year, especially in that big second quarter. USF shot 41.7% from 3-point distance on the afternoon, including a 5-for-9 showing in the second. Krimili hit three treys and Kia Vaalavirta hit four to lead USF. The Gators weren't afraid to shoot from deep either, though, matching the Dons with Armendariz's four long balls and Ashley Hart's three.
Â
- Nine different Dons saw action in San Francisco's first of two preseason tune-ups, including four returners – Rathbun, Vaalavirta, Julia Nielacna and Marija Galic. Vaalavirta was one of six Dons in double figures Saturday, scoring 17 points off the bench. Nielacna collected seven rebounds as a reserve, and Galic continued to prove her knack for being in the right place at the right time, scoring three points and grabbing three rebounds in limited action.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 2: Two Dons had double-doubles Saturday. Rathbun scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and the newcomer Williams scored 14 points and had 11 boards. Williams added five assists while Rathbun had a game-high four steals.
- 20: Krimili led all players with 20 points in her first actual NCAA basketball action. She hit three 3-pointers, was 5 for 6 from the free-throw line and pulled down four rebounds to boot.
- 57: Rebounding was huge for the Dons Saturday, as they outrebounded the Gators, 57-29. Every single USF player that saw time had at least two rebounds.
