SAN FRANCISCO – Playing their second to last home game of the 2019 campaign, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team struck first but it wouldn't be enough as the visiting Pacific Tigers (6-9-1/3-3-0 WCC) scored late in regulation to force overtime. In the extra period, the Dons (2-13-1/0-6-0 WCC) fell victim to a golden goal with 26 seconds left in the first overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• In the opening half, the two sides traded shots but neither squad could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. The Tigers threatened, outshooting the Dons 9-3 including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. USF keeper
Ruben Stuiver had a strong first period, recording four saves.
• In the 60
th minute, a scrum in the Tigers' box ended when freshman
Jaidon Reynolds corralled the ball and put enough on the shot to score the first goal of the game. The goal by Reynolds was his first collegiate goal.
• Unfortunately for the Dons, the one goal lead would not stand as the Tigers evened the game at one on a free kick just outside the penalty area. UOP's Ryan Her scored the goal when he sent a shot to the inside corner of the net that stunned the Dons' defense.
• In the first overtime period the two sides struggled to evade each other's defenses long enough to mount an effective attack. With the game appearing destined to head to a second overtime, the Tigers scored the game winner when Johnatan Rico-Contreres found space and launched a shot from the far right corner of the penalty area that got past a diving Stuiver for the goal.
• For the game, the Tigers outshot the Dons 15-7 and had a 7-2 shots on goal advantage. Stuiver finished the game with five saves. His counterpart Ethan Bandre gets the win after tallying just one save.
