BASE | Late Offense Not Enough as Dons Fall to Wildcats in Series Finale

FORT WORTH, Texas – A late charge by the University of San Francisco baseball team fell short as the Dons fell to host Kansas State 11-5 in the finale of the three game series at Marie Lupton Stadium on the campus of TCU.

Grant Young (1-1) took the ball for the Dons (5-5) in the rubber match but was unable to get out of the fourth inning.  In three and a third innings of work, he surrendering three runs on six hits. At the plate, the Dons finished with five runs on seven hits, the big hit a solo home run by catcher Robert Emery, his first in the green and gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED
•    Kansas State (5-6) scored first in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by K-State's center fielder Zach Kokoska.  The Dons took the lead in the top of the fourth inning Jack Winkler started a two-run rally with a double down the left field line that scored Riley Hellend.  After Winkler advanced on a wild pitch he came in to score on the ground ball to second by Jonathan Allen.

•    In the home half of the inning, Young got into trouble, and was unable to get out of the jam.  K-State retook the lead scoring two runs on three hits, the go ahead run coming on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Maxson.

•    The Dons added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, but it wasn't enough as Wildcats' starter Will Brennan scattered three runs on four hits in seven innings of work for his first win of the year.

COACH G QUOTES
•    "We did not pitch as well as we hoped today," said head coach Nino Giarratano. "We were unable to stop them in two out situations.  We did a good job of defending today and battled back late in the game.  We will continue to work and will get stronger as the season progresses."

COMING UP
•    The Dons will return to the Bay Area for a midweek non-conference game against San Jose State. Tuesday's game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
