BASE | Top of the Order, Pitching Combo Helps Dons Even Series

STOCKTON, Calif. — Multiple hits from both ends of the lineup and another 1-2 punch from starter Scott Parker and reliever Alex Pham Friday carried the University of San Francisco baseball team to a 6-3 West Coast Conference series-tying win over host Pacific at Klein Family Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A day after he saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end, Tyler Villaroman was right back at it Friday with a 3-for-5 day. He started the game 0 for 2, but he singled in each of his last three at-bats, driving in what would serve as the winning run to break a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth and scoring an insurance run in the eighth. Jack Winkler also went 3 for 5, his second multi-hit game in the series. He scored the Dons' (22-16, 11-6 WCC) first run in the first inning to make it 1-0 and was the one who drove in Villaroman in the eighth to make it 6-3. The No. 1 and 2 batters in the Dons' lineup (Villaroman and Winkler, respectively) went a combined 6 for 10 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

  • Riki Urata went 2 for 4 from the No. 9 spot in the order, his first multi-hit game since March 29. He also played strong defense at second base, completing all seven of his chances with no errors. It was his first appearance at the four-spot on the field in more than two weeks, and his first start there since March 31. San Francisco rapped out its third-most hits of the season with 14, but they were all singles. It was the Dons' third double-digit hits game in their last four.

  • The Dons capitalized on a Pacific (21-17, 8-9 WCC) error in the first inning to score two runs and take an early 2-0 lead. With runners on the corners and two outs, Tigers' third baseman Alex LeForestier tried to backhand a groundball from Robert Emery and instead saw it bounce off of his glove and deep into left field foul territory. That allowed Winkler to score from third and Jonathan Allen to score all the way from first base.

  • Pacific got a run back in the bottom of the first without a ball leaving the infield. Two walks, an error on the Dons – also at third base – and an infield single brought home a run to make it 2-1. But Parker was able to leave the bases loaded and avoid further damage, getting a force play at the plate and striking out Bryce Kirk to end the threat.

  • Emery brought home another run in the top of the third when he singled through the right side to score Winkler from second, making it 3-1 USF. Winkler had led off the inning with a single and stole second base to set up the RBI opportunity. Pacific catcher James Free erased that deficit and pressed the reset button on the game with a game-tying two-run home run over the high left field wall to make it 3-3.

  • USF wasted no time getting the lead back. Four consecutive singles in the top of the sixth, the last coming from Villaroman, made it 4-3. Pinch-runner Matthew Mendibles scampered home on a wild pitch to give the Dons an insurance run and make it 5-3.

  • That's when Alex Pham entered the game. Pham relieved Parker (6-2), who won his fifth consecutive decision, in the top of the sixth. Pham earned his fifth save of the season with four perfect innings of relief, striking out five with no hits, no walks and no runs allowed.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 0: San Francisco had no extra-base hits on Friday for the fifth time this year and second time in its last three games. USF is 4-1 in those games this year, the only defeat coming Tuesday at home versus Nevada.
  • 1: The Dons have been charged with one error in each of the first two games of the series versus Pacific. It snapped an eight-game streak without an error for USF. The Dons haven't had a multi-error game since March 30 at Santa Clara.
  • 5: Scott Parker won his fifth straight decision on Friday, and Pham earned his fifth save of the season. Parker has allowed two earned runs or less in each appearance during his streak. Pham has only allowed one run during his five saves – all multi-inning appearances – for a 0.59 ERA in those games.
COMING UP
  • The rubber match of the series comes at 1 p.m. Saturday. Pacific right-hander Ryan Shreve – fresh off a no-hitter last week at Santa Clara – will face a USF starter still to be announced. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
