BASE | Dons Rally From Behind Again to Beat Spartans

SAN FRANCISCO — It was a familiar scene Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond, one that unfolded with uncanny predictability.

For the second time in four weeks, San Jose State stuck itself to a multi-run lead in the top of the first inning, only to see the University of San Francisco baseball team come all the way from behind and win the game, this time with six unanswered runs in a 6-3 non-conference victory that extended the Dons' winning streak to four straight.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans (14-15) scored three runs in the top of the first, all with two outs. Back on March 5, SJSU put five runs on the board in the top of the first to lead 5-0. But just like a month ago, those were all the runs the Spartans would score on Tuesday (they did add a single run in the ninth inning back on March 5). Meanwhile, San Francisco (17-11) slowly worked its way back into it.

  • The Dons (17-11) didn't get their first base runner until the bottom of the third, and didn't see their first base hit until the fourth when Riley Helland ran out an infield single on a ball hit deep into the second-base hole. That would be what got the offense going finally, as Jonathan Allen tripled Helland home for their first run, Robert Emery doubled home Allen, Brandon Greim doubled home Emery and Urata brought home Jacob Munoz (single) and Nick Yovetich (walk) to complete the comeback and give USF a 4-3 lead. Urata's clutch go-ahead two-run single came on an 0-2 count and with two outs, and he slapped it to the opposite field.

  • Greim doubled again in the sixth in what would be a career day for the freshman. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. He nearly scored an additional run in the fourth, but was thrown out at the plate on an attempted sacrifice fly. Jacob Westerman made sure Greim came home in the sixth, hitting his first career home run with the Dons as a pinch-hitter, a two-run shot that gave USF some breathing room at 6-3.

  • Julian Washburn (6-0) earned his West Coast Conference-leading sixth win with 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He scattered four hits and struck out two while walking none. Grant Young backed him up with two innings of shutout relief, Josh Mollerus threw up a scoreless frame, and Joey Steele earned his seventh save of the year with a perfect ninth.

  • SJSU's Kellen Strahm, who entered the game hitting .408, slugging .544 and carrying an on-base percentage of .508 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and 13 stolen bases, went 2 for 3 with a double, walk and a run scored Tuesday. But he was left stranded at second in the sixth and was thrown out trying to steal second after he led off the third inning with a single, as the Dons minimized his impact on the game.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 3: San Francisco only walked three batters in 37 total batters faced Tuesday. During the Dons' current four-game winning streak, they have not walked more than four in a game. When they lost four of their five games prior to the streak (March 19-26), they walked five or more in each defeat.
  • 4: Westerman's home run gave USF a home run in four consecutive games. The Dons have hit at least one home run in 12 of their last 15 games and are No. 2 in the WCC with 21 team HRs this season.
  • 10: The Dons now have 10 come-from-behind wins this season. Two of them have come against San Jose State. Six of them have come with USF taking the lead in the seventh inning or later.
  • 11-1: The Dons are now 11-1 at home this season, the only defeat coming on March 16 versus Portland. It is the Dons' best start at home in at least the last seven years (since the 2013 season).
