BASE | Rally Falls Just Short in Series Finale vs. LMU

SAN FRANCISCO — Sunday's rubber match game between the University of San Francisco baseball team and Loyola Marymount was a sample of everything that had gone on during the team's three-game West Coast Conference series this weekend.

A wild first four innings settled into a battle of bullpens, and for the third day in a row, the game was decided by one run, as the Lions yet again staved off a comeback attempt by the Dons to clinch a series victory with a 6-5 win at Benedetti Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Francisco (18-13, 7-5 WCC) had a chance to walk off in the ninth inning after earlier rallying from being down 6-0. Tyler Villaroman got aboard with a one-out infield single to bring the winning run to the plate. Jack Winkler followed with another single to put Villaroman on third as the tying run. When Riley Helland grounded to first base, LMU first baseman Trevin Esquerra came home with the throw, and catcher Cooper Uhl put the tag on Villaroman to preserve the Lions' one-run lead. Then Jonathan Allen, the WCC leader in home runs and team leader in RBIs, came to the plate, but would strikeout swinging to end the game.

  • USF was down, but not out, after Loyola Marymount (20-11, 9-3 WCC) scored six runs in the first three innings. The Dons began rallying back in the bottom of the third when Villaroman tripled home two leadoff walks to make it 6-2. He would later come home to score on a two-out infield single from Allen, slicing LMU's lead in half at 6-3.

  • San Francisco carried its rallying momentum into the fourth with the first four batters all reaching safely, including an RBI infield single by Brandon Greim and an RBI double by Chase Hodkinson that made it a one-run game at 6-5. But now with the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, the Dons would hit two infield popups and a grounder back to the pitcher to end the threat.

  • But the Dons missed their opportunities down the stretch to tie the game or even take the lead. After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, USF got a leadoff single in the fifth, but a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play ended the inning. It left the tying run in scoring position in the sixth, and hit into an inning-ending double play in the seventh with the tying run on first.

  • Loyola Marymount was aggressive from the start on Sunday. Five of their first six hits in the game came within the first three pitches of the at-bat. Three of their five run-scoring plays in the opening innings also came within the first three pitches of the at-bat, as the Lions put up six runs on the board to shoot out ahead, 6-0.

  • The Lions scored three runs in the first inning before San Francisco even had a chance to take its first turn at bat. A two-run double by Trevin Esquerra made it 2-0, and two pitches later, Tommy Delgado followed it with an RBI single to drive him in and make it 3-0. Shearer doubled home another run in the second to give LMU a 4-0 advantage. A run-scoring single from Ethan Patrick and a squeeze bunt by Kenny Oyama pushed the Lions' lead to 6-0 in the top of the third.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 3: Villaroman collected a career-high three hits Sunday, including his second triple of the season and his second multi-RBI game of the year. He now has a five-game hitting streak, in which he's batting .348 with a home run, triple, four runs scored, three RBIs, two multi-hit games and a stolen base.
  • 4 for 12: San Francisco went 4 for 12 (.333) overall with runners in scoring position Sunday, but after Hodkinson's RBI double in the fourth that made it 6-5, they went 0 for 6 with no ball leaving the infield.
  • 10 1/3: Julian Washburn threw 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief on Sunday, striking out five and only allowing one hit. That extended his scoreless innings streak to 10 1/3. He also threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief on Tuesday in a win over San Jose State.
