SAN FRANCISCO – Visiting Cal State Fullerton wasted no time taking the momentum, scoring three times in the first 20 minutes. However, the Titans were unable to hold on to the lead as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team battled their way back and earned the hard fought draw on Friday evening at a foggy Negoesco Stadium.
The Dons (6-3-1) and Titans (7-2-1) put on an offensive display. Either team had ample opportunities to take home the win, the two sides combined for 42 shots with 20 on goal. Keeper
Olivia Camera (6-3-1) finished the night with six saves, none bigger than her save in the second overtime when she turned away a shot from inside the box.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Titans struck twice in rapid succession early in the first half. The first goal of the game coming in the 10
th minute when Maddie Bennett corralled her own shot and sent it past a diving Camera. Two minutes later, a cross by the Titans led to an open look for Atlanta Primus who scored the first of her two-first half goals. Primus struck again eight minutes later to put the Titans up three.
• Late in the first half the Dons finally got on the scoreboard. The Titans were called for the first of two penalties inside the box, giving the Dons a penalty kick.
Miciah Madison took the PK for the Dons, the first of her career, but Cal State Fullerton's keeper Victoria Ryan (1-0-1) notched the third of her five saves in the opening half.
• Fortunately for the Dons, Ryan wasn't able to hold on to the ball and
Ashley Humphrey took the rebound on Madison's penalty kick for her first goal of the year. Less than two minutes later it was
Miciah Madison's turn to send one to the back of the net when she blasted a shot past goal from 30 yards out to score her sixth of the year to bring the Dons within one.
• Midway through the second half, the Dons had an excellent chance at an equalizer when
Samantha Jehnings was awarded a penalty kick, unfortunately for the Dons senior the new Cal State Fullerton keeper Allison Poole (1-0-1) picked up the save and kept USF off the board.
• At the 70
th minute the Dons finally did get the equalizer when
Sydney Cooper took a cross from
Samantha Jehnings and beat the Titan keeper low and tow the right. It was the sixth and final goal of the evening with both teams coming up empty in overtime.
