BASE | CSU Bakersfield Takes Series Finale in Pitching Duel

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco baseball team got solid pitching performances on the mound Sunday, but so did host CSU Bakersfield, as the Roadrunners held the Dons' offense at Bay in a 2-0 non-conference shutout win to clinch a series victory at Hardt Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second Sunday in a row, San Francisco (2-5) went with a double-headed monster of Landen Bourassa and Grant Nechak to start the game as they both work back from injuries a year ago. Both of them improved upon their outings from a week ago. Bourassa only allowed one run and did not surrender a hit in two innings. Nechak threw two shutout innings and struck out four.

  • Meanwhile, San Francisco's offense lacked the timely hit it needed, going 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. USF left two runners on base in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, including one in scoring position each time. In the sixth and the seventh, the runners were on with less than two outs.

  • CSU Bakersfield (4-3) scored its first run in the second inning without a base hit. A leadoff walk followed by a fielder's choice that failed to record an out, with the runner beating the ball to the bag at second base, gave the Roadrunners two on and no outs. Another fielder's choice with USF not able to turn the double play made it one out and runners on the corners. Nick Grossman would come home to score on a groundball back to Bourassa on the mound.

  • The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the sixth with Grossman again starting the rally. He reached on an error to start, and then a single and back-to-back walks brought him home. Julian Washburn went three innings in relief for USF, only giving up two hits and striking out three.

  • CSUB's big pitching performance came from Davonte Butler (2-0), who threw six shutout innings and struck out eight while scattering four hits and walking none. Noah Cordova recorded a four-out save, with a huge strikeout of pinch-hitter Darius Foster on a full count to end the eighth and strand two runners, preserving the lead.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • .155: USF's 0-for-6 performance Sunday with runners in scoring position dropped its season average in those scenarios to .155. It was the second time this season it's gone 0-fer with runners on (Feb. 14 at CSUN, 0 for 7).
  • 2: Nick Yovetich had the Dons' lone multi-hit performance on Sunday, going 2 for 4. It was his third multi-hit game of the season, raising his team-leading batting average to .357.
COMING UP
  • San Francisco's seven-game road trip continues Tuesday in the South Bay at San Jose State before heading back to Southern California for a three-game non-conference series at Cal State Fullerton. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
