TUCSON, Ariz. – Winds blowing at 45 mph, rain and temperatures that never got above 45 degrees are not typical of Arizona, but those were the conditions the University of San Francisco men's golf team faced in the opening round of the Arizona Intercollegiate at the par-71 Sewailo Golf Club.
The Dons finished the day in eighth place after shooting a 22-over 306. After 18 holes, tournament host Arizona sits in first after shooting an even par 284. They were the only team at par on the day.
USF had three players finish in the top-30 of the loaded field with Soren Lind faring the conditions the best. Lind finished the day tied for 20th with a 4-over 75. He opened the round with four-straight pars en route to 11 on the day. He carded a birdie on the par-5 eighth to go into the turn 1-over. On the back-9 he birdied the par-5 15 to get back to 1-over before finishing the round with a bogey on 16 and a double on 17.
Matthew Anderson and Tim Widing finished tied at 28th. Anderson, like Lind, had a strong day on the longer holes. Both Anderson and Lind finished the day 2-under on the par-5s with an average score of 4.33.
Anderson's round started drastically different than Lind's however. The third year opened the tournament with bogeys five of the first seven holes before knocking in a birdie putt on the par-5 eighth. Anderson finished the front-9 with a 6-over 41. On the back-9 he played tremendously, four-straight pars led to back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15. The lone blemish on the back was a bogey on 16. Anderson finished the day with a 5-over 76.
Widing also finished with a 5-over 76. The Dons' fifth year finished the day with 12 pars, which is tied for fifth most in the tournament. On the front-9 he was 2-over thanks to a double bogey on six. On the back-9 he opened with four-straight bogeys before finishing strong with a birdie on 14 and four-consecutive pars.
Christoffer Palsson is tied for 54th after shooting an 8-over 79. Palsson recorded a pair of birdies on the back-9. Toby Briggs is tied for 61st after shooting a 9-over 80.
Competing as an individual, Alex Chin is currently sitting in 45th after shooting a 7-over 78.
The individual leader after 18 is Arizona's Brad Reeves who finished with a 3-under 68. He was one of just seven players to shoot even par or better in the opening round.
The Dons will return to action for round two tomorrow morning. The Dons will tee off at 9:30 a.m. starting on the first hole. Live results will be available at Golfstat.com.
