Dons Drop Battle Against No. 25 San Diego

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Returning home to The Hilltop after their first road conference match on Tuesday, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-12, 0-4) battled No. 25 San Diego (9-3, 3-0) to the brink in the first two sets on Thursday evening, but ultimately fell to the Toreros in three sets, 3-0.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • USF got on the board first on a kill from freshman standout Shyia Richardson, but USD responded right away with six consecutive points to take an early 6-1 lead. Remaining within striking distance as the set continued, the Dons came within three points, 22-19, following another kill from Richardson. Ultimately, the Toreros buckled down in the closing moments to secure the set win, 25-20.
  • Moving into set two, USF tested San Diego again, this time pulling in front, 15-14, after an attack error from the Toreros. Trading points down the stretch, USD used the strength of a 3-0 scoring run to lock down the victory in set two, 26-24.
  • Finding their rhythm in the third set, San Diego jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back as they took down USF, 25-15, to secure the 3-0 match win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Continuing to shine no matter the opponent, Richardson tied for the game-lead with eleven total kills on Thursday. Notably, it was also her third collegiate double-double as she tallied a team-high 10 digs on the evening as well.
  • Finishing second on the team with seven total points, Orsula Staka logged five kills on nine total chances while also tallying one assist, one ace, one block and one dig.
  • Impressively, Aylen Ayub recorded 23 assists against the Toreros, good for her third-most in a match this season.
UP NEXT:
USF will continue conference play when they host No. 10 BYU on Saturday, Oct. 2 at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. Beginning at 12:00 pm, live streaming and live statistics will be available via the team's schedule page.
