Dons Down Davidson in Gritty Win at Chase Center

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.  Returning to Chase Center for the first time since 2019, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (3-0) pushed their winning streak to three consecutive games on Saturday night as the Dons hung on to take down Davidson (1-1), 65-60.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Following a few shots on each side to open the contest, Jamaree Bouyea got the scoring started for USF on a layup at 18:44 in the first half.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Wildcats responded by scoring six straight points to jump in front, 8-5, by the first media timeout.
  • Matching each other step-for-step through the remainder of the first half, the two teams continued to exchange baskets in what proved to be a back-and-forth affair. However, in the final two minutes before heading to the locker room, the Dons would outscore Davidson 8-2 in the final two minutes of the first half to take a seven-point lead at intermission, which included Gabe Stefanini drilling a step back three over a Wildcat defender at the buzzer. Holding a slight advantage at the break, USF remained on top, 27-20.
  • Moving into the second half, Stefanini extended the USF lead to nine to begin the period on a layup just 17 seconds into the action, but the Wildcats would respond with six consecutive points of their own to trim their deficit to 29-26 at the 16:24 mark.
  • Just a few moments later, USF answered with another offensive run as a triple from Bouyea at 10:41 capped off an 18-7 run from the Dons that put them up by fourteen, 47-33.
  • Showing their grit, Davidson climbed back once again down the stretch, which included a 10-0 run that brought them within four points, 57-53, with 2:02 remaining in regulation.
  • Reminiscent of hometown hero Stephen Curry, Bouyea nailed a deep three from just one step in front of the half court logo at the 1:05 mark, giving the Dons a seven-point advantage, 60-53, with just over one minute left on the clock.
  • After finding the necessary stops defensively, USF would convert on five consecutive free throws to close out the contest while forcing contested looks for the Wildcats. Ultimately, the Dons would hang on to secure their second victory all-time at Chase Center, 65-60, behind a collective team effort on both sides of the ball.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • In yet another impressive effort, Bouyea finished as the leading scorer for USF as the 6'2" guard poured in 14 points on 6-of-14 from the field while also adding 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 assist.
  • Coming up clutch when called upon, Stefanini added 12 points on 3-of-9 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Additionally, he also tallied 4 assists and 1 steal in the win.
  • Rounding out the double figure scorers, Josh Kunen proved to be one of the difference makers for the Dons as his clutch shooting helped the Dons remain in front down the stretch. Overall, the 6'8" forward finished 3-of-6 from behind-the-arc with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
  • Notably, Khalil Shabazz tied his career-high with 6 steals on Saturday evening as the Seattle native also posted 8 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds.
  • As a team, USF outshot Davidson (45.8 percent to 42.0 percent) while also winning the turnover battle (13-10). Collectively, the Dons led the Wildcats in points off turnovers (17-14), fast break points (13-6) and bench points (24-6).
