USF Drops Heartbreaker to Stanford in 90th Minute

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Battling a Pac-12 opponent for the third time this season, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (2-11-1, 0-4-1) dropped a heartbreaker to Stanford (6-6-5, 2-4-3) on Thursday evening following a late goal from the Cardinal in the 90th minute.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With neither team recording a shot through the first nine minutes of action, Stanford recorded their first attack at 9:31 on a shot from Keegan Tingey, which ultimately sailed wide of the cage. For the Dons, USF tallied their first attempt at a goal at 18:11 on a shot from Nathan Simeon, but the Cardinal goalkeeper Matt Frank saved the strike to keep the match scoreless.
  • As the two sides continued to press throughout the first half, each team would find another chance offensively to take an early lead, but neither would be able to convert in the first 45 minutes. At the halftime break, the score remained knotted at 0-0.
  • Moving into the second half, Nonso Adimabua came out firing for the Dons to begin the second half as he attempted his first shot of the evening at 50:04, but was once again denied by the Cardinal goalkeeper.
  • Following a few shots from Stanford, Adimabua continued to apply pressure with shots at 67:07 and 70:17, but the Cardinal defense turned away the Dons to keep the match at no score.
  • Down the stretch, Stanford would remain on the offensive attack as they ultimately found the game-winner in the 90th minute on a goal from Carlo Agostinelli. Locking down for the final seconds of regulation, the Cardinal shut down the USF attack one final time to secure the 1-0 road victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • For Adimabua, the forward logged his sixth match of the season with at least three shots and his third match with three shots on goal.
  • Laying it all out on the line, goalkeeper Brandon Keniston recorded his sixth straight match with at least five saves.
  • Aiming to provide a spark offensively, Simeon tallied a shot for the third consecutive contest after scoring in USF's previous two matches last week.
UP NEXT:
The Dons will play their final home match of the final this Sunday, Nov. 7 when they host Loyola Marymount at Negoesco Stadium on Senior Day. Festivities to honor the three USF seniors will begin approximately 10 minutes prior to kick off.
