Dons Use Stifling Defense to Win Opener over Morgan State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Playing in front of fans for the first team in a year and a half, the USF Dons' women's basketball team (1-0) took care of business Tuesday night as they knocked off the Morgan State Bears (0-1) by a final score of 69-53 at War Memorial Gym at the Sobrato Center.

USF put together a stingy defensive effort holding the potent Bears' to a 27% shooting percentage from the field while the Dons offense was in sync throughout shooting 55% as a team while also knocking down seven three point shots.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons took control of the contest early racing out to an 18-8 first quarter advantage where they shot 56% from the field and held the Bears to a paltry 21%.
  • USF's starting five featured all retuning players and the unit was cohesive throughout allowing the Dons to build their lead and not relinquish it throughout the game.
  • Morgan State improved their offensive performance during the second quarter but USF was able to win the period and take a 13-point lead into halftime.
  • The pace of the game slowed down during the second half as the Bears shot 14 free throws in the third quarter alone.
  • Trying to get back in the game, Morgan State cut the deficit to 11 before USF used a 7-0 run to take control of the game which ended up being a 16 point Dons victory.
  • USF received nice contributions from their bench tonight as they scored 28 points as a unit for the Dons.
  • Tuesday night's victory was controlled throughout by the Dons as they led for all but one minute of action.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Reigning WCC Newcomer of the Year, Ioanna Krimili picked up right where she left off as she scored 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, including knocking down four triples after breaking the school record for three point makes in a season last year.
  • Junior guard Jasmine Gayles made an immediate impact in her first game as a Don scoring 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting. The transfer from Northern Colorado also had a rebound and an assist to begin her USF career.
  • After missing the Dons' exhibition against Chico State, junior guard Amalie Langer didn't appear rusty at all giving great effort on both ends of the floor. Langer finished with 16 points and three rebounds, with 10 of her points coming in the third quarter.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH GOODENBOUR:
"Pleased to start the season with a win against a scrappy and tough Morgan State eam. We are learning to play with our new personnel and our goal is to keep developing and growing as a team throughout the preseason. This was a great way to kickoff the year, and it was so nice to have fans back in the gym cheering for us!"

UP NEXT:
USF will now turn their attention to the California Golden Bears (1-0) as they will face off in a neutral site matchup at Chase Center. Cal began their season with a 90-71 home victory over Sacramento State. For tickets to this Saturday's game at Chase Center please click here
