SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Playing in front of a raucous home crowd, the University of the San Francisco men's basketball team (10-0, 0-0) used a second half surge to power past Fresno State (7-2, 0-0), 71-63, and remain perfect on the season at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center on Wednesday night.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Getting on the board in style, the Dons notched the game's opening points on a two-handed slam from Yauhen Massalski at the 18:21 mark. Finding his rhythm early, the 6'9" forward would go on to score 14 of USF's initial 17 points as the Dons stretched their lead to 17-12 after a free throw from Massalski at 11:20.
- Shortly thereafter, Fresno State responded with a 19-7 run to close out the first twenty minutes of action as the Bulldogs limited USF to their lowest first half point total this season, taking a 31-24 advantage into the locker room.
- Regrouping at the break, the Dons immediately applied pressure to begin the second half by cutting their deficit to five, 31-26, following a jumper from guard Jamaree Bouyea. Limited to just two total points in the first half, the Seaside native proved to be on a mission as the contest transpired as back-to-back three-pointers from Bouyea brought the Dons to within four, 45-41, at the 12:38 mark.
- Trading blows over the next ten minutes, USF had drawn with one, 58-57, with under six minutes remaining in regulation on a floater from Gabe Stefanini at 5:20. Displaying his late game heroics once more, Bouyea followed with a stepback triple to even the score at 60 with just 4:31 on the clock.
- Using the support of the Dons faithful, USF rallied back to close the game on a 11-3 run, which included five more points from Bouyea down the stretch. Despite a last second push from the Bulldogs, the Dons ultimately hung on to take down Fresno State, 71-63, move to 7-0 at home this season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Turning heads once again, Bouyea was named the Player of the Game for the second consecutive contest after finishing with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond-the-arc. Additionally, the fifth year Don also added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in the victory. Notably, 25 of Bouyea's 27 points came in the second half.
- Carving out his role down low, Massalski logged double figures for the fourth straight game after pouring in 20 points on 9-of-11 while also tallying four rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal.
- As a team, USF outscored Fresno State 47-32 in the second half to secure their tenth consecutive win. Overall, the Dons led the Bulldogs in points off turnovers (14-9) and fast break points (14-4).
