LOS ANGELES — The 2021 University of San Francisco men's soccer spring season kicked off on the road Monday, with the Dons falling, 3-0, against power program UCLA at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
Â
San Francisco's (0-1) defense played strong for a majority of Monday afternoon's contest, keeping it close at 0-0 or 1-0 for 72 minutes, with the Bruins (1-0) tacking on two insurance goals late (72nd and 88th minutes). The Bruins' first goal came just over nine minutes into the game, with Ben Reveno volleying in a score off a header from Grayson Doody, who was playing a ball off a corner kick from Tommy Silva, giving UCLA a 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Dons nearly tied the game in the 17th minute.
Nonso Adimabua put a shot on goal that was saved by UCLA goalkeeper Justin Garces, which then went off the crossbar and back out. San Francisco would outshoot the Bruins in the first half, 6-4.
Â
UCLA held the Dons without a shot in the final 45 minutes and was forcing offensive pressure, but USF's defense kept right up. The Bruins finally broke through with an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Ahmed Longmire led Kevin Diaz down the sideline with a pass. Diaz crossed it to the six-foot mark, where Pablo Greenlee punched it in for a 2-0 UCLA advantage.
Â
The Bruins' final goal came in the 88th minute, a solo score by Riley Ferch, who dribbled up through the center of the box closer and closer until finally sending it low for the score and a 3-0 final tally.
