MSOC | Dons Fall to Toreros in Overtime

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team scored the game's first goal in the opening minutes, but the San Diego ended it in the opening minutes of overtime as the Toreros came back to beat USF 3-2 in the first overtime on Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.

USF (3-3-0, 2-1-0) takes its first loss in conference play after the Toreros (2-1-1, 2-0-1 WCC) scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute off a free kick from the foot of Jack Schneider – his second of the day.

"Obviously we started the game well to get a goal early," said head coach Leonard Griffin. "The first 45 minutes wasn't bad we just need to find a way to finish out the game.  Our guys fought hard but it was a game we need to look back and learn from. But we will move on and keep pushing on."

The Dons wasted no time putting points on the board scoring in the second minute.  On the far side of the field near the corner, Ivo Neto beat the Toreros defender to a loose ball and sent a pass to the middle that Nik Kizarian tipped to Nonso Adimabua who had a wide-open look at the net on the left side of the goal. The goal for Adimabua was his second of the season, it is the first career assist for both Neto and Kizarian.

The Toreros immediately went on the attack.  USD put pressure on the Dons defense all afternoon. Back-to-back corner kicks by USD in the 22nd and 23rd minute resulted in team saves by the Dons.

Five minutes prior to halftime, the Toreros eventually tied the game up with Jack Schneider scored the first of his two goals on the day when he took a pass from Ross Johnstone and beat Alejandro Munoz.

At the break the two sides were tied on the scoreboard and in shots with each side tallying five shots. San Diego had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks at the intermission.

Out of the break, the Dons made a change at goal going with Brandon Keniston (1-1-0), who took the loss after allowing a pair of goals.

USF scored first in the second half when Nonso Adimabua sent a pass to Rodrigo Bueno who attempted to send a pass back to Adimabua but instead it deflected off a Torero defender giving the goal to Bueno, his second of the year, in the 53rd minute.

The Dons' defense was once again unable to hold the lead late in the half.  The Toreros evened up the contest in the 85th minute when Ross Johnstone ended up with a loose ball at the top of the Dons' penalty area and sent a shot to the top-right corner.

With the score tied at 2-2 the two teams headed to the first overtime. It did not take long for the Toreros to put the game away. In the 92nd minute Schneider took a free kick about 30 yards out and sent a shot to the top-left corner past a diving Keniston for the winner.

USF will return to action on Sunday, March 19 when they host Pacific at 6:00 p.m. Sunday's contest against the Tigers will be streamed online at the WCC Network.
