SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco women's tennis team earned another major program victory on the season, beating BYU for the first time in six years with a dominant, 6-1, West Coast Conference win at the Olympic Club.
The Dons (11-6, 3-3 WCC) only dropped the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches en route to dominating the Cougars (15-8, 4-3 WCC). After BYU swept the No. 1 doubles spot, San Francisco took both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to earn the point. Arianna Capogrosso and Rita Colyer beat Leah Heimuli and Madeline Wanlass, 6-3, at No. 2, and Chiho Mushika and Maria Martinez Vaquero beat Emilee Astle and Kara Lin, 6-4, at No. 3.
BYU evened the match with a win from Anastasia Abramyan at No. 1 singles, but it was all Dons after that. Three consecutive singles wins from Caragh Courtney (No. 6), Capogrosso (No. 5) and Colyer (No. 4) clinched the match victory for USF, and three-set triumphs by Martinez Vaquero (No. 2) and Mushika (No. 3) put the icing on the cake.
San Francisco closes out its regular season on Saturday when it hosts Santa Clara at the Goldman Tennis Center in Golden Gate Park.
