MSOC | Munoz Brilliant as Dons Earn Draw against No. 10 LMU

LOS ANGELES – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team traveled to Sullivan Field where No. 10 Loyola Marymount entered 4-0-0. After a full 90 minutes and two overtimes the two sides settled for a hard-fought draw, 0-0.

USF (4-4-1, 3-2-1) finished the afternoon with 13 shots, four on goal. But it was the defense, highlighted by the play of keeper Alejandro Munoz that stood out on Saturday.  Munoz finished with a career-high 10 saves, the last coming on the 108th minute in the second overtime. The last time a USF keeper had 10 or more saves game on November 3, 2018 when Ruben Stuiver had 10 against Santa Clara.

Loyola Marymount (5-0-2, 4-0-2) remains unbeaten at home and on the year. The Lions finished the afternoon with 21 shots, 10 on target. Offensively the Lions were all over the Dons in the second half and overtime where they took 16 of their 21 shots.

The first half did not feature much offense as both squads tallied a combined 11 shots – six by the Dons and five by the Lions.

USF did have a 3-2 advantage of shots on goal with Nonso Adimabua tallying two of those shots on goal. All three of the Dons' shots on goal came early in the opening half.

Munoz began his impressive day with a pair of saves late in the first half that kept the Lions off the board.  The second coming off an attempt by LMU's Carson Kendall in the 44th minute. Following the saves the Dons attempted a quick attack before the half with Rodrigo Bueno's attempt in the final seconds of the half sailing wide.

Early in the second half the Dons got two quick shots by Nik Kizarian and Dominic Valdivia but it was LMU that put the pressure on goal early. Two shots by the Lions, the first by Alexi Liu in the 55th minute and the second by Duhaney Williams in the 58th minute led to saves by Munoz.

The trend continued with the Lions outshooting the Dons 12-6 in second half. Munoz was absolutely brilliant, recording seven saves in the second period.

Both teams seemed to run out of gas in overtime. In the third period the Lions had a 2-1 advantage in shots, in the second LMU tallied two more with USF being held without a shot.

Adimabua and Bueno led the Dons with four shots each. Adimabua put three on goal.

With his 10 saves and zero goals allowed, Munoz (3-1-1) lowers his goals against average to 0.85, he now has 23 saves on the year. Jacob Jackson (5-0-2) continues his strong season, he finished with three saves and no goals allowed.

The Dons will play their final game of the spring 2021 season next Sunday when they host Portland at 2:00 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium. Sunday's game will be streamed on the WCC Network with Charles Wolin on the call.
