WSOC | Broncos Score Four Goals in Defeat of Dons

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team allowed an own goal early in the contest and that opened the flood gates as the ninth ranked Santa Clara Broncos came away with the lopsided 4-0 win over the Dons on Saturday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
 
USF (2-4-2, 1-4-1 WCC) finished the day with 11 shots, six coming in the second half. But the Dons' attack could not match the Broncos. Santa Clara (6-1-0, 6-1-0 WCC) finished the afternoon with 20 shots, eight on goal.
 
The Broncos took the advantage thanks to a pair of goals just minutes apart.  The first game in the 12th minute when the Dons knocked the ball in for an own goal trying to clear on a Bronco attack.
 
A minute later Kelsey Turnbow scored the Broncos' second goal when Alex Loera sent a long pass to a streaking Turnbow who fired a shot past Molly Eby. It was Turnbow's seventh goal of the year.
 
The Broncos scored their third goal when Turnbow chipped a pass to Izzy D'Aquila who knocked the header past Eby for her fifth of the season.
 
USF's best chance to score in the first half came in 31st minute when the Dons countered quickly sending a pass to Bianca Coad who was all alone. A hard foul by the Broncos thwarted Coad from getting a shot off, the ensuing free kick by Ana Gorlach was knocked down by the keeper Nicolos.
 
The Broncos went into the intermission with a 13-5 advantage in shots including a 5-2 shots on goal advantage.  Eby finished the first half with three saves. Gorlach and Isabelle Esparza had USF's two shots on goal.
 
Early in the second half, the Broncos added to their lead when Sally Menti launched a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, curling it into the top left corner for her first goal of the season.

Eby finished the day with five saves but takes the loss. She falls to 2-4-2 on the year. The win goes to SCU's Marlee Nicolos who had four saves on the afternoon, she improves to 6-1-0. 
 
The Dons will return to action on Saturday, April 13 when they play the first of two Southern California contests. The Dons begin the week playing the Lions at Sullivan Field on Saturday. That game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start. The following Tuesday the Dons will play their final road contest of the season at San Diego.
