MSOC | Dons Draw with Golden Bears in Exhibition Finale
8/20/2021 5:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team struck early and late against host California. The final exhibition match of the season for the Dons ended in a 2-2 draw Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
USF got on the board very early when Dominic Valdivia sent one to the back of the net off a corner kick. The strike came in just the second minute.
From there, the Dons were stifled by the Golden Bears defense, with the two sides trading possessions in the middle of the field.
The Dons went into the intermission leading 1-0 thanks to a strong showing from USF's back line which held Cal to just three shots in the opening period.
Out of the break, the Bears struck twice in rapid succession. Cal's first goal came in the 52nd minute when Juan Martinez took a pass from Evan Davila to tie the game at 1-1.
Less than a minute later, Cal struck again. This time a header by Kevin Carmichael on a cross from Alonzo Del Mundo's corner.
Trailing 2-1, the Dons offense took it to the Bears. USF outshot Cal 12-5 on the day, 8-2 in the second half. Six of USF's shots were on goal. With time winding down, Nonso Adimabua split the Bear's defense and launched a shot past keeper Collin Travascos.
"I was very happy with the progression we had from San Jose State," said head coach Chris Brown. "A number of guys stepped up and played really well. Arjan has come in and been really strong the last two days. Overall, our back line was very good defensively. We did have a couple of lapses with two shots on goal and both went in, but we aren't giving teams a ton of opportunities. We need to tighten up on those chance we are giving, but overall, I'm very pleased with the group. We are trending in the right direction."
"On the attack e were better in possession tonight and we found our moments to stretch the field," added Brown. "We were just a little bit different than we were against San Jose State. I think we are ready for Sacramento State."
USF will return to action on Thursday, August 26 when the Dons host Sacramento State for the official home opener. Thursday's game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kick off and will feature live stats and video.
