SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team battled visiting Oregon to 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium. USF played tremendous defense against a tough arial bombardment from the Ducks, and got a brace from defender
Kenna Roth.
Oregon (1-0-1) struck first early when Caitlin Shaw took a pass from Alice Barbieri on near side. The show by Oregon was one of 10 in the first half by the Ducks. Oregon finished the afternoon with 26 total attempts, 10 of which were on goal.
USF (0-0-1) had their opportunities early.
Marie Marlow had a great look at goal inside the penalty box in the opening minutes but saw her shot sail over the cross bar. The Dons eventually got even in the 15
th minute when
Kalena Teufel went on a brilliant run deep into the Oregon territory and was tackled from behind inside the box for a penalty kick.
Kenna Roth took the PK for the Dons and calmly blasted a shot past keeper Leah Freeman to tie the match up at 1-1. The goal by Roth was her first collegiate goal.
The two sides had more opportunities in the first half, but Freeman, and her replacement Maddy Goldberg and, Dons' keeper
Molly Eby were up to the task. The two sides went into the intermission knotted up 1-1.
USF was outshot 10-6 in the first period, with Oregon owning a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half. USF's back row of Roth,
Catherine Hill,
Samantha Curwood-Wagner, and
Isabelle Esparza were tremendous defensively.
Ten minutes into the second period Roth struck again. This time she blasted a ball on a volley from the top of the box past Goldberg, giving the Dons the lead.
USF's defense and midfield looked up to the task at preserving the 2-1 advantage, but the Ducks scored a goal in the 69
th minute when Chardonnay Curran scored on a header on the far post off the feed from Zoe Hasenauer to tie the game up at 2-2.
The goal by Curran came after three-straight corner kicks by the Ducks. USF battled in the air, but could not clear the ball which led to the eventual equalizer.
In overtime, USF's defense once again rose to the occasion. The Ducks had two corner kicks in the first overtime and two shots total, but were turned away each time. In the second overtime, Oregon had three more shots on goal, but Eby and the defense kept them out of the back of the net.
Eby (0-0-1) finished the afternoon with six saves, she now has 103 for her career.
The Dons will return to action on Thursday when they travel to San Jose, Calif., to take on San Jose State. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. first kick.
