MSOC | Adimabua's Career Night Leads Dons Past Hornets

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on Thursday night, defeating Sacramento State, 2-1, at Negoesco Stadium to notch their first win of their 2021 campaign.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Despite three shots from the Hornets to open the contest, the Dons opened the scoring on a crafty goal from 2020-21 WCC Freshman of the Year Nonso Adimabua in the 17th minute as the forward blasted his first goal of the season past the opposing goalkeeper to give USF the early 1-0 lead.
  • As the half played, the two teams would trade shots on goal, but Sacramento State ultimately evened the contest at one on a penalty kick goal from Axel Ramirez in the 36th minute.
  • Just seconds before halftime, Adimabua displayed his excellence on the pitch again, this time dancing around a Hornet defender to score for his second goal of the match. At the break, USF remained on top of the Hornets, 2-1.
  • Moving into the second half, the Dons would stay steady on the defensive end as freshman Charlie McKay impressed in his collegiate debut in the cage. Notably, USF held Sacramento State to only three shots in the final 45 minutes of action.
  • Aiming for the hat trick, Adimabua fired his last shot of the evening in the 80th minute, but was unable to find the back of the net. With the defense turning up the intensity down the stretch, the Dons would ultimately hold on for the 2-1 victory to record their first season-opening win since 2018 and the first win of the Chris Brown era. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • After being crowned as the top freshman in the conference last season, Adimabua tallied his first collegiate match with two goals against the Hornets. Overall, he also led both teams with five total shots and three shots on goal.
  • Shining in his first collegiate action, McKay recorded three total saves for the Dons while allowing just one penalty kick goal.
  • As a team, USF outshot Sacramento State, 11-8, while also drawing 17 total fouls against the Hornets. Notably, it was also USF's first win over the Hornets since a 2-1 home victory on Sept. 9, 2012.
