Dons Show Fight in Loss to Santa Clara

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning to their home surface on Saturday afternoon amid cold and foggy conditions, the USF Dons women's soccer team (5-5-3, 0-3) battled hard throughout before ultimately falling short against the Santa Clara Broncos (6-6-1, 3-0) 4-1 at Negoesco Stadium.

After allowing a pair of quick goals from the Broncos, the Dons were able to respond with an own goal after Lindsey Chau fired a hard shot off the leg of a Santa Clara defender to get USF their first goal of the night.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Santa Clara was able to get on the board first midway through the first half as they scored goals at the 22nd and 24th minute mark to give the road team the early 2-0 advantage.
  • The Dons were able to respond with an aggressive attack as Chau received a great pass from Kaylin Lunsford and fired a shot off the Bronco defender into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game.
  • The Broncos were able to score once more before the half in a high scoring 45 minutes on the Hilltop finished with Santa Clara leading 3-1.
  • A majority of the second half was a defensive struggle with neither side able to build much momentum before the Broncos scored a late goal to take the 4-1 victory over the Dons.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Chau was able to help the Dons get on the board for their lone goal against the Broncos on Saturday as she played 79 minutes while getting the start at forward.
  • Marissa Vasquez led the way for USF with three total shots and played the entire 90 minutes for the Dons.
  • Alex Carpio was able to record the other Dons shot on Saturday with a shot on goal against the Broncos.
  • Making her second career start in goal, sophomore Kira Ybarra recorded a pair of saves for USF.
UP NEXT:
The Dons now return to the road next Saturday as they head down to Southern California to take on the #22 Pepperdine Waves (7-1-3, 1-0-1) at Tari Frahm Rokus Field at noon. USF faced off with the Waves last season on the Hilltop in a match that ended in a 4-1 Pepperdine victory at Negoesco Stadium.
