SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Closing out their season, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (7-6-4, 0-5-2 WCC) fought hard until the final whistle on Saturday night at Negoesco Stadium but ultimately fell San Diego (8-4-6, 6-0-1 WCC) a single goal in the second half.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Starting off fast, the Toreros fired the first shot of the match 20 seconds in, but graduate goalkeeper Kainoa Likewise cleaned it up to record his first save. Sustaining multiple attacks from San Diego, the Dons struck back with a dangerous first shot by Zane Alafranji that went just over the crossbar in the 15th minute of the match.
- Both fighting to get a goal before the end of the half, Nathan Simeon took a shot on goal in the 40th minute and the Toreros followed with a shot of their own just a minute later, leading to another save for Likewise. The first half ended with the two teams knotted at 0-0.
- Coming into the second half for Likewise, Eric Waltz was solid in the cage as he made a huge save one-on-one with a Torero forward on the break in the 46th minute followed by another save in the 50th minute to ward off the Toreros.
- Challenging San Diego offensively, Rodrigo Bueno rocketed a shot to the back post that went just wide in the 55th minute and Dominic Valdivia followed with a shot on goal in the 58th minute.
- San Diego got on the board with a goal by Nicklos Clausen assisted by Mason Tunbridge at the 72:12 mark to make it 1-0. In response to the goal, the Dons recorded six shots in the remaining 18 minutes of the match, but couldn't find the back of the net before the final whistle.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Starting for the second time this season, Likewise kept the opponent at bay by making four saves on six shots faced in the first half.
- Outshooting the Toreros 15-12, the Dons had 10 different players record a shot in the match as Dominic Valdivia tallied three shots in the game to finish out the season with a total of 39 shots, good for the most on the team.
- Dangerous in the midfield, senior and team captain Kevyn Lo recorded 90 minutes and two shots in his last match on the Hilltop. Notably, this performance marked his tenth game playing the full 90 minutes for the Dons this season.
