USF Prepares for Busy Week on the Hilltop

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- As the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaches, the 2022-23 college basketball season begins to heat up with the first tournaments of the season are set to begin this week. The USF Dons women's basketball team (2-2) now looks ahead to a three game week beginning with a Monday morning tip-off against the Penn Quakers before hosting the USF Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday as they will welcome Tulsa, Long Beach State and South Carolina State to the Hilltop.

USF has received mixed results through their first four games of the season, as the Dons have been able to defeat Cal State East Bay and preseason favorite in the Sun Belt Troy, before falling short against the Pac-12's Washington State and USC. Senior forward Kennedy Dickie has stared for the Dons through the first two weeks of the season as she's averaged 12.8 PPG and a team-high nine rebounds per contest while shooting a highly efficient 51% from the field and 46% from three-point distance.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • Heading into a three game week at home, the Dons are looking to flex their home court advantage after playing three strong opponents in a row in Washington State, Troy and USC.
  • The Dons benefited from a tremendous performance from Ioanna Krimili earlier this week against Troy as she was able to move into second place in program history for made three point shots after knocking down six against the Trojans on Wednesday. Krimili is averaging 15.0 PPG to begin her fourth season on the Hilltop to go along with 3.5 rebounds per game and just under three assists per game.
  • Jasmine Gayles has continued to be a bright spot off the USF bench as she's averaging 12.3 PPG while also doing tremendous work on the glass to the tune of 5.8 rebounds per game through the Dons' first four contests.
  • As a team, USF has done tremendous work on the glass early this season as they currently rank second among WCC teams in rebounds per game as they're averaging 43 boards per game through the season's first four games.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS:
  • Penn comes to the Hilltop seeking to end a three game losing streak after their season opening victory on the road over Marist, the Quakers have dropped recent contests against Northwestern, St. Joseph's and #24 Villanova.
  • Leading the way for Penn early this season has been the play of senior guard Kayla Padilla who's the team's leading scorer at 16.3 PPG as she's also been able to secure 5.3 rebounds per game this year.
  • The Dons' defense will look to put together a strong team effort and limit the Quakers' opportunities to secure easy looks as Penn has averaged just 52.8 PPG as a team this season.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
  • South Carolina State has been road warriors through the early portions of the season with their first five games taking place away from Orangeburg with the Bulldogs being winless against East Carolina, Queens University-Charlotte, St. Thomas, North Carolina and Campbell.
  • Sophomore guard Nicole Gwynn has been leading the way for the Bulldogs through the early portion of the season as she's averaged a team-high 9.6 PPG this season and has been opportunistic on the defensive end of the floor coming away with 11 steals this season.
  • USF's offense will try their best to take advantage of the Bulldogs defensive struggles early on this year, as South Carolina State has allowed 68.8 PPG this season and their opponents have shot 40% from the field as well.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS:
  • The 49ers have had a quiet start to their season as they've competed in just two games so far this season losing to Gonzaga on the road before defeating La Sierra at home for their first win of the season.
  • Leading the way for Long Beach State early in the season has been senior guard Malia Bambrick who leads the 49ers by averaging 15.0 PPG and has gotten the job done shooting from beyond the arc with a 43% three-point shooting percentage early on.
  • USF will have their hands full trying to limit the 49ers' offensive attack as Long Beach State has averaged 62.5 PPG early on this season while shooting 43% from the field as a team to go along with 35% from three point range.
