SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Wrapping up their season on a high note, the USF Dons women's soccer team (8-5-6, 3-3-3) came out victorious on Saturday night at Negoesco Stadium as they knocked off fellow Bay Area rival the Saint Mary's Gaels (5-6-7, 1-4-4) 1-0 on Saturday night on a cold and rainy night in the City.
Kenna Roth was able to find the back of the net late in the first half for the lone goal on Saturday night off a corner from
Marissa Vasquez, and goalkeeper
Megan Nail was able to record her third straight clean sheet while corralling four saves against the Gaels.
The victory was a perfect cherry on top to USF's finish to the season as they were unbeaten in their last six matches to finish with a winning record for the first time since the 2019 season. USF's defense played a key role in the late season surge as the Dons allowed just four total goals over their last six matches this fall.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Both teams spent the early portions of the match feeling each other out among the wet and cold conditions that were in the forecast in San Francisco as the match was scoreless as halftime approached.
- As the Dons set up for a Vasquez corner kick, Roth was able to set herself up in a strong position to make a play on the ball as she headed in the eventual game winner just before the break as USF took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
- USF was able to create numerous chances to pad their lead in the second half as they out shot Saint Mary's five to three in the final 45 minutes as their aggression allowed them to play on the Gaels' side of the field. SMC attempted to claw their way back into the match in the final minute as they fired a shot off the right crossbar that ricocheted out of bounds and allowed the Dons to take the 1-0 victory on their home pitch.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Roth had the play of the night when her header beat the Gaels' keeper as she was able to score her first goal on the season as she appeared in 17 matches for the Dons during the fall 2022 season.
- Vasquez wrapped up her tremendous season on the Hilltop by recording her first assist and to add her team leading 15th point of the season on Saturday against Saint Mary's.
- Nail finished her career as a Don by recording four saves on nine shots faced on Saturday to pick up her fifth shutout of the season and ending the season with a total of 64 saves.
