DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • Last time out, USF dropped a hard-fought matchup to UT Arlington, 68-63, following a strong, physical effort from the Mavericks on both ends of the floor on Monday night.
  • As a team, San Francisco continues to have confidence from deep as the green and gold currently rank sixth in the nation in three-point attempts per game with an average of 29.5.
  • So far this season, USF is a perfect 3-0 in competition on Wednesdays as the Dons have taken down Fresno State, Little Rock and Merrimack in midweek contests. Notably, USF's showdown with Arizona State will mark Coach Gerlufsen's first time squaring off against a Pac-12 opponent on the Hilltop.
  • For Gerlufsen, Thursday will be the first time he faces off against his former school as he served as an assistant coach at Hartford from 2006-13 before being promoted to associate head coach from 2013-15.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS:
  • This past Sunday, ASU routed fellow WCC foe San Diego, 91-67, at home in Tempe as the Sun Devils cruised to victory behind five players finishing in double figures, which was led by 23 points from Desmond Cambridge Jr.
  • Entering the contest at an impressive 11-1, Arizona State's lone blemish of the season came against Texas Southern on Nov. 13 when the Sun Devils fell by one point to the Tigers, 67-66, at home. Notably, USF took down Texas Southern on opening night, 90-77, on Nov. 7. With this strong start, Bobby Hurley's squad has recorded their best start since 2017-18.
  • Arizona State has been one of the best defensive teams in the country through twelve games, making it difficult on opponents to score no matter the matchup. As of Tuesday night, the Sun Devils currently rank fifth in the nation by holding their opponents to just 35.1 percent shooting from the floor. Overall, they have held their opponents to less than 60 points in six of their 12 games, the most in the Pac-12 this season.
  • Calm under pressure, the Sun Devils are 29-14 in two possession games over the last four seasons, marking the most wins in Division I during that span. So far this year, ASU has played in six two-possession games, boasting a 5-1 record moving into Wednesday night.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:
  • Aiming to get back on track, Hartford comes to the West Coast following a 67-51 loss to St. Francis College Brooklyn this past Saturday, Dec. 17. Currently on a four-game slide, the Hawks last logged a victory in a 74-66 home defeat of Farleigh Dickinson on Nov. 30.
  • Offensively, the Hawks are led by Briggs McClain, who averages a team-high 16.5 points per game while shooting an impressive 46.7 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from behind-the-arc.
  • Getting out on the road over the next few weeks, Thursday's date with the Dons will mark the first road game for the Hawks in a six-game stretch that features five contests away from home.
  • Prior to the start of the season, assistant coach Tom Devitt, who is in his tenth year with the program, was promoted to interim head coach. Overall, Devitt has more than 20 years of coaching experience and was instrumental in helping the Hawks win the 2021 America East tournament and earn the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Wednesday's matchup between the Dons and the Sun Devils will mark the twelfth meeting all-time between the two programs. Currently, ASU holds a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series. Previously, USF defeated Arizona State, 66-65, in a wire-to-wire thriller in Tempe on Dec. 19 of last season. Notably, USF's last home win over ASU came in a 102-90 victory on Dec. 30, 1977.
  • Thursday's meeting between the Dons and the Hawks will mark the second meeting all-time between the two programs. In their one previous matchup, USF took down Hartford, 74-73, on the road on Dec. 29, 1987.
