DAVIS, Calif. -- Playing in their first road game of the 2022 season, the USF Dons baseball team (2-2) took care of business Tuesday afternoon on a cold and wet day by defeating the UC Davis Aggies (0-4) 6-2 at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
USF used a two-run top of the first and and a four-run fourth inning to take control of the game early on and wouldn't relinquish the lead thanks to tremendous work from the pitching staff with seven arms combining to get through nine innings of work.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The Dons wasted no time on Tuesday to get on the scoreboard as Harris Williams III laced a single right up the middle to score Luke Keaschall and Gabe Giosso for a clutch two-out, two-run single to give USF the early lead.
- UC Davis answered back with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but they would be held scoreless all the way until the seventh inning after that.
- USF would put the game away for good with a four-run top of the fourth thanks to a Kyle Knell two-run double, Jordan Vujovich RBI single and finally an RBI double from Mario DeMara.
- Relievers Jonah Jenkins, Matt McConnell, Julian Washburn, Kai Burdick, Lance Santerre and Josh Mollerus each combined to throw the final seven innings allowing just one earned run while striking out 11 Aggie hitters and walking just one.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Williams III went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored playing the whole game in right field and hitting in the middle of the USF batting order.
- Knell got the start in left field and delivered with a two-run double down the left field line past the outstretched glove of the Aggie third baseman for two more huge runs to give the Dons some breathing room.
- Adam Shew made his first collegiate start on Tuesday afternoon working two innings allowing one run on the solo home run while walking one batter and recording one strikeout.
- Mollerus shut the door in impressive fashion by throwing the final two innings and recording five of his six outs via strikeouts.
- DeMera led both sides with a three hit day and he drove in the final USF run of the game.
