USF Prepares for Final Week of the Regular Season

It's been a tremendous February for the Dons with a 5-2 overall record this month, including a perfect 2-0 slate last week with USF securing wins over Portland at home and in Malibu over Pepperdine. Ioanna Krimili and Claudia Langarita became the first teammates to win Player and Freshman of the Week at the same time this season and it marks the fourth time in the last two seasons that the Dons have swept the weekly awards.

STREAKING DONS:
  • Following an 0-4 start in conference play, the USF Dons women's basketball team have gone 9-3 since to now sit all alone in third place in the conference standings.
  • USF received tremendous individual performances from Krimili and Langarita, as Ioanna set a new career-high with 38 points in her team's victory over Portland and followed that up with 28 in the win over Pepperdine in Malibu. While Claudia averaged 14.5 PPG and 4.5 rebounds in the two games, including a playing a career-high 37 minutes in the win over Portland as she was inserted into the starting five.
  • A key part of the team's success in conference play has been a highly efficient offense that's ranked in the top four as a team in field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage this season.
  • Saturday afternoon served as a great bounce back performance from Jasmine Gayles, as she scored 17 points off the bench as she shot 7-for-11 from the field to go along with two assists, a rebound and a steal.
SCOUTING THE LIONS:
  • USF had their way with LMU in their first meeting of the season on the Hilltop, coming away with the 70-49 victory at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
  • Gayles led both teams scoring 20 points off the bench in the victory, while Kennedy Dickie and Krimili each reached double figures in scoring as well.
  • Guard Ariel Johnson has been the Lions' leading scorer this season as she's averaged 15.1 PPG as well as 5.6 rebounds per game and it will be important for USF to limit her production.
  • The Dons will look to find more success guarding LMU's guard Nicole Rodriguez who's sixth in the conference overall in three-point percentage at 39.1% but struggled in the first matchup between the two schools shooting 1-for-9 from three-point range.
SCOUTING THE GAELS:
  • With the regular season finale set for Saturday afternoon, the Dons will welcome the Gaels to the Hilltop for a rematch after defeating Saint Mary's in Moraga 70-56 in January.
  • Gayles once again led the Dons in scoring during USF's win over Saint Mary's as she scored 22 points off the bench with Dickie posting a 12 point and 14 rebound double double.
  • The Dons will hope to repeat their strong performance on the boards in their rematch as they out rebounded the Gaels 36-35, which is no small task as Saint Mary's in third in the WCC in boards per game.
  • USF will have their hands full with forward Ali Bamberger, who's averaging 15.1 PPG this season and is second in the conference with 9.3 rebounds per game this year as well.
