Dons Shutout Broncos to Close Out Series

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Closing out their first conference series of the 2022 season, the USF Dons baseball team (12-10, 1-2) shut out the Santa Clara Broncos (11-7, 2-1) 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

Jesse Barron was phenomenal throwing four shut out innings, while the Dons' offense was kick started by a three-run home run from Gabe Giosso in the bottom of the first inning as USF played a complete game as they picked up their first conference win of the season in shutout fashion.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons got off to a great start after escaping a bases loaded nobody out situation in the top of the first and then got on the board as Gabe Giosso hit his fourth home run of the season over the wall in left center to score Darius Foster and Jordan Vujovich.
  • USF added on to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Luke Keaschall was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Harris Williams III, then Jordan Vujovich walked a batter later that scored Kyle Knell.
  • Giosso once again drove in a run later in that same inning with an RBI single that scored Foster for the second time in the game as the Dons led 7-0 through four innings.
  • Adding on to their lead in the fifth inning, USF scored their eighth run on a sacrifice fly from Williams III that scored Nick Yovetich, and then Mario DeMera scored later in the inning on a RBI double from Knell.
  • In an all-around performance from the Dons, the pitching staff for USF shut out the Broncos for the rest of the game as they went on to win 9-0 on Sunday afternoon.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Barron had a terrific afternoon on the mound as he threw five scoreless innings and struck out seven Bronco hitters while walking none. He's now tossed eleven consecutive scoreless innings dating back to his start last weekend against Missouri.
  • Giosso was a force in the middle of the order as he went 2-for-4 with the home run and four RBI on Sunday afternoon.
  • Foster did his job in the lead off spot as he went 2-for-4 as well with two runs scored and his 13th stolen base of the season.
  • Pitching in relief Oscar Lepe and Josh Mollerus threw a combined four scoreless innings allowing just four hits, walking none and striking our six Santa Clara hitters.

UP NEXT:
The Dons now return home for a one game weekday matchup with the Nevada Wolfpack (9-8, 5-3) on Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch will be at 2:00 p.m. live streaming and live statistics will be available via the team's schedule page
