DeMera's Big Day, Great Bullpen Effort Leads USF Past St John's

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- On a cold, and windy day in the Bay Area the USF Dons baseball team (7-4) shook off a slow start to defeat the St John's Red Storm (1-9) 8-3 for the second time in as many days to take the first two games of the four game series.

The Dons used a four-run bottom of the fourth to take the lead and control of the game as Owen Stevenson and Jesse Barron combined to throw eight strong innings and Kai Burdick slammed the door in the ninth as USF picked up their sixth win on their home diamond. Infielder Mario DeMera had a strong game at the plate going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored as the Dons' offense once again had a productive afternoon in the batter's box.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • St John's got their offense going early in the game as they scored first run of the game on a solo home run in the top of the second inning.
  • After a slow start and a few runners left on base, the Dons broke out in a big way during the fourth inning as Zach Freeman drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Brandon Greim had an RBI single and Luke Keaschall brought in two runs thanks to some suspect Red Storm defense.
  • Coming off the bench to pinch hit, Gabe Giosso drove his second home run of the season over the wall in left as the Dons grew their lead to 5-1. Giosso has continued his stellar start with his time at USF as he's currently third on the roster in slugging percentage.
  • DeMera added another cushion to the Dons' lead with an RBI double in the sixth as USF led 7-1 after seven innings of play.
  • The Red Storm tacked on two runs in the eighth and Lane Oliphant came off the bench to deliver an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to get one of those runs back to lead 8-3.
  • Burdick came in for the ninth and shut the door without incident as the Dons picked up their seventh victory of the season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • DeMera had a tremendous performance picking up a season-high three hits in the win as he was all over the place making nice plays defensively at third and providing thump from the sixth spot in the batting order.
  • Greim hitting in the lead off spot was a great spark for the offense as he went 2-for-5 with two runs driven in against the Red Storm.
  • Barron provided strong relief as he picked up his second win of the season as he threw four innings and allowed two runs with striking out a season-high eight St John's hitters.
  • Keaschall continued his stellar play with two more hits on Friday to raise his batting average to .342 through the season's first 11 games.
  • Stevenson battled through not having his premier stuff on Friday as he threw four innings allowing just the one earned run to go along with four hits and two strikeouts.
UP NEXT:
USF now looks ahead to the third game of the series as Weston Lombard (1-0, 1.93 ERA) will make his third start of the season against LHP Ben Adams (0-1, 10.80 ERA). First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m. PST with live streaming and live statistics available via the team's schedule page
