SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- In a back-and-forth high scoring affair on the Hilltop, the USF Dons baseball team (10-4) used an impressive ninth inning comeback to defeat the Fresno State Bulldogs (6-7) 10-9 for their fifth straight victory of the season. Freshman
Zach Freeman recorded his first collegiate hit off the wall in right field to score
Gabe Giosso for the walk-off single to send the Dons faithful home happy.
Kyle Knell hit his first home run of the season to get the Dons on the board early in the game and freshman
Patrick Keighran collected his first two hits of his college career with an RBI triple to help USF's offense to victory.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Knell's blast over the wall in left got USF off to a quick 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second.
- Fresno State answered back with four runs in the top of the third to retake the lead in what was a see-saw ballgame throughout.
- Keighran cut the deficit to a run with his triple down the left field line to score Mario DeMera and make it a 4-3 game in the bottom of the fourth, USF then tacked on a couple more runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead thanks to a DeMera double and a Giosso RBI groundout.
- The Bulldogs' offense then went off in the top of the sixth plating five runs to retake a 9-5 lead through the middle innings.
- USF responded by scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning as Darius Foster drove in a run with an RBI groundout and Luke Keaschall plated Jordan Vujovich with a two-out RBI double to make it 9-8.
- Down a run and down to their final two outs, USF evened the score with an RBI triple to center from Giosso scored DeMera setting up Freeman to be the hero as he launched a base hit off the wall in right to score Giosso and give the Dons their fifth straight win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Knell got the game off to a quick start for the Dons with his two run blast as he went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored in the win.
- The freshmen duo of Keighran and Freeman put together great at-bats as they both combined to 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI's.
- Team leader in batting average Giosso just raking with two more hits on Wednesday as he also drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.
- DeMera also kept his hot streak at the plate rolling with two hits and two RBI courtesy of his two-run double that gave the Dons the lead in the fourth inning.
- Hitting in the leadoff spot, Jordan Vujovich reach base four times with three walks and a base hit as he continued his propensity for finding a way on base.
- Sam Beck, Adam Shew, Julian Washburn, Will Hearn, Jesse Barron, Lance Santerre and Josh Mollerus each combined to throw seven scoreless innings in a bullpen day for the Dons' staff as Mollerus picked up his first win of the season with a scoreless top of the ninth to set up the walk off base hit.
