MALIBU, Calif. – Returning to conference play after a midweek matchup against Stanford, the University of San Francisco baseball team (17-20, 6-7 WCC) played their longest game of the season in their series opener against Pepperdine (18-14, 7-6 WCC) as the Dons and Waves reached the fourteenth inning before Pepperdine walked off USF, 4-3, at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Out of the gates, the first two innings did not produce much action as the Waves got on the board with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to take an early 2-0 lead. One inning later, Pepperdine tacked on one more run to hold a 3-0 advantage through the first four innings complete.
- With neither team able to do damage in the fifth, the Dons responded with a two-run double off the bat of Brandon Greim in the top of the sixth to trim USF's deficit to one, 3-2.
- Similar to the middle innings, both teams were not able to gather much momentum at the plate as the Dons would not score again until the top of the ninth. After Harris Williams III doubled to left center, Gabe Giosso and Jordan Vujovich both walked to load the bases. Remaining hot in conference play, Mario DeMera then lined a single into left field to drive home Williams III and even the contest at 3.
- After the Waves were unable to respond in the home half of the ninth, the game stretched into extra innings and was eventually suspended in the top of the thirteenth due to the sun setting in Malibu on Thursday night. Pitching from the bottom of the ninth until the game was suspended, Josh Mollerus delivered 4.0 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen, racking up six strikeouts while allowing just one hit on 51 total pitches.
- On Friday afternoon, the game resumed in the top of the thirteenth at 2:00 pm. Defending their home field to begin the weekend, Pepperdine found the game-winning knock on a single up the middle from Charles Masino as the Waves walked off the Dons, 4-3, in fourteen innings.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Enjoying a successful day at the dish, DeMera logged his fifth game of the season with 3+ hits as the sophomore finished 3-for-6 with one walk, one run scored and three RBI.
- Providing a spark towards the bottom of the order, Greim continued to stay hot with the bat as he notched his third two-hit performance in his last four games and his sixth overall this year as he went 2-for-5 with one walk and two RBI.
- On the mound, Jonah Jenkins recorded his sixth scoreless outing of the season with 1.0 inning pitched while Mollerus tallied his thirteenth scoreless appearance for the Dons with 4.0 innings of shutout baseball.
