Toreros Top Dons in Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. – Returning to postseason play for the first time in four years, the University of San Francisco baseball team (28-29, 14-13 WCC) battled until the final out on Wednesday afternoon in Stockton, but ultimately fell to third-seeded San Diego (33-18, 17-10 WCC), 10-5, at Banner Island Ballpark.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Out of the gates, the Toreros got on the scoreboard first with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Keeping pace, Brandon Greim delivered a solo shot in the top of the second to trim USF's deficit in half, 2-1, through two innings of play.
  • After a scoreless third inning from both sides, the Dons loaded the bases to begin the fourth as Harris Williams III and Gabe Giosso drew walks before Greim reached base via hit by pitch. One batter later, Zach Freeman did his job by driving home Williams III on a sacrifice fly to left field to knot the contest at 2-2.
  • Breaking out their power swings in the inning to follow, Michael Campagna singled to lead off the top of the fifth before Luke Keaschall launched his eighth home run of the year over the left center field wall to put USF on top, 4-2. Two batters later, Giosso joined the party by blasting his ninth long ball of the year to extend the Dons lead to 5-2.
  • Trading blows once more, the Toreros came back to even the game at 5 all on a three-run home run of their own in the home half of the sixth.
  • Digging deep in the late innings, USD would go on to add two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to push their advantage to 10-5.
  • Unable to find the late magic they needed to climb back, the Dons were retired in order in the top of the ninth as the Toreros hung on to take down USF in the knockout round of the WCC Tournament, 10-5.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • In his final game in the green and gold, Greim finished 2-for-2 with one RBI, one run and one walk.
  • On the mound, Jesse Barron tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for USF as the right-hander logged his seventh scoreless outing of the year on Thursday.
  • After leading the conference in home runs as a team during the regular season, USF launched 3+ home runs for the sixth time this year against the Toreros.
THANK YOU, DONS FANS:
Through all of the adversity this season, we thank all of our fans for the support of our baseball program. This team showed their resilience by making it to the West Coast Conference tournament for the first time in four seasons and we could not be prouder of this group of individuals.
