MORAGA, Calif. – Battling in another tightly-contested matchup, the University of San Francisco baseball team (24-26, 11-12 WCC) dropped game two of their weekend series at Saint Mary's (24-23, 11-12 WCC), 3-2, as the Gaels bested the Dons by one run on Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Despite both teams getting baserunners on in the opening frame, the Gaels got on the board first on an RBI double from leadoff hitter Gavin Napier in the bottom of the second to claim an early 1-0 lead.
- With both starting pitchers settling in as the middle innings approached, neither USF or Saint Mary's could find much momentum at the plate. For the Dons, Riley Ornido went 4.2 innings while allowing just one run to keep USF within striking distance of SMC.
- Turning the tides to begin the seventh, Jordan Vujovich came up clutch by launching his fifth home run of the season, driving home Gabe Giosso and putting the Dons on top, 2-1.
- After going down in order in the home half of the seventh, Saint Mary's responded in the bottom half of the eighth as Dalton Mashore answered with a go-ahead two-run double to put the Gaels back in front, 3-2.
- Coming out of the bullpen to record his third save of the year, Nathan Schneider came on to close out the ninth to help Saint Mary's squeeze past USF by the same score as game one.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- With his long ball in the seventh, Vujovich became the fifth Don this year to hit at least five home runs: Luke Keaschall (7), Gabe Giosso (7), Harris Williams III (6), Nick Yovetich (6) and Vujovich (5). Notably, it was also the eighth multi-RBI game of the season for the senior from Sacramento.
- Keeping their respective streaks alive, Keaschall pushed his on-base streak to eighteen straight games with one walk while Giosso notched one hit to reach base for the sixteenth straight contest. Entering double digits, Willliams III has now also reached in ten straight games.
- Adding to his season total, Williams III swiped his eighteenth stolen base of the year on Saturday, good for fourth in the WCC.
