Dons, Spartans Draw In Hard Fought Match

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Playing their third straight match at home to open the season, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (2-01) battled San Jose State (1-1-1) to the brink on Thursday evening at Negoesco Stadium, but the match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Wasting no time out of the gates, Max Chretien fired for the first shot of the match for either team at the 3:32 mark in the first half, but was denied by goalkeeper David Sweeney.
  • Less than one minute later, the Spartans struck first on a goal from Joel Garcia to take an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Despite shots from Andri Jonasson and Max Hamelink as the half transpired, USF was unable to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action as SJSU maintained their 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • Notching the initial shot in the second half, Jessung Kim fired his lone shot of the match at 48:29, but the sophomore could not deliver the equalizer that was needed for the green and gold.
  • Taking matters into his own hands, Dominic Valdivia answered the bell quickly thereafter by finding the perfect window in the left corner of the goal on a free kick at 50:47 to knot the game at 1-1.
  • As the half played on, USF found a handful of shots at the Spartans goal, but could not convert to jump in front. Following two final shots from Valdivia in the closing minutes, the Dons did not allow SJSU to score down the home stretch as the two teams remained level after 90 minutes on the pitch. Due to new NCAA rules beginning in 2022, no overtime periods will take place during regular season competition.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • For Valdivia, the Santa Monica native is now tied with Hamelink for the team lead in goals (2), points (4) and shots (8) following his performance on Thursday.
  • In the cage, Eric Waltz continued his strong start to the year by tying his season-high with four saves against his former team.
  • As a team, USF outshout San Jose State, 15-9, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half. Overall, the Dons took seven corner kicks to the Spartans' three.
